AnotherOS

A from-scratch, x86_64 operating system — its own kernel, its own
x86_64-anotheros-musl libc/toolchain, its own desktop (Fasadas), and its
own package manager (apkg). It is not a Linux distribution and not a
Linux fork: it identifies itself as anotheros and is an independent OS that
ports Linux drivers through a LinuxKPI compatibility layer. ~350k lines of
C across ~1,270 files.
What it is
- Kernel — x86_64, SMP with a MuQSS scheduler and LAPIC preemption, 4-level paging with demand paging + swap, ext2/ext4, a VFS, a full POSIX/musl syscall surface, and hardware drivers (ATA/AHCI, Intel HDA audio, r8169/iwlwifi networking with WPA2, xHCI USB HID) ported from Linux via LinuxKPI.
- Graphics — Grafika, a Metal-like graphics HAL + public API. A software
backend and a GPU backend (
gpu_i915) over a real DRM/GEM/EXECBUFFER2 stack drive Intel hardware acceleration; Mesa (crocus) provides hardware OpenGL/GLES. The Fasadas compositor can present GPU-composited, zero-copy via dma-buf/PRIME. - Desktop — Fasadas, a native compositor (no X11) with the Kvarcas 2D
engine, a dock, and macOS-style
.aopapp bundles in/Applications. - Userland & ports — a native toolchain, and ported applications (Firefox, GTK3, Qt6, Mesa, and more) built and distributed as apkg packages.
Status
x86_64-only (the i686 architecture was retired). It boots on real hardware (Dell Inspiron Haswell 2014, Acer Aspire one, a MacBookPro8,3 over iPXE/limine netboot) and in QEMU; GPU-accelerated 3D and a GPU-composited desktop are proven on Intel hardware, with packaged, installable-to-HDD images and persistent installs. Ongoing work: full Firefox GPU acceleration (hardware WebRender over the dma-buf present path) and moving toward a self-hosting system.
